Understanding Spotting in Early Pregnancy: Causes & Concerns

Question
I have been spotting for the last week. I had a ultrasound on Monday (6,5 weeks lmp) showing a heartbeat of 112 bm. Spotting is a bit worse today and is tinged pink. I've noticed that spotting is more following a bowel movement, or after sex or brisk walking. I've not experienced any cramping. No blood showed up on the ultrasound - would that mean I am bleeding from a sensitive cervix? After the spotting started, I had a few days of yellowish discharge, but no itching. I am still experiencing nausea, tiredness and swolen breasts. I am 27 years old and this is my first pregnancy. Should I still expect to have a miscarriage eventhough we saw the heartbeat? If the baby is fine after a week of spotting, is it possible that the bleeding has nothing to do with the fetus?
Thank you in advance for your reply.

Answer
It is, indeed, possible that the bleeding has nothing to do with the fetus. The risk of miscarriage is 15-20% of every pregnancy. However, once you hear a heartbeat, the risk drops to 5% risk of miscarriage. If the sonogram showed no evidence of bleeding, all you can do is wait and see. If you start to bleed heavily, get into bed. The placenta has not formed yet, so we can't know where it will implant. Be patient. If the bleeding becomes heavy with cramps, call your doctor.
