Post-Abortion Follow-up: Understanding Residual Tissue & D&C Options

Question
I had a medical ab 3 weeks ago, and I came in for a follow up.  I still have light bleeding, and they said I have some residual tissue, and I am asymptomatic of any complications.  However as a precaution they would like me to have a D&C.  I feel fine, but am scared of getting a surgical procedure...would it be safe to opt to wait another week and see if it will clear on it's own?

Answer
Dear Chrys,
It is absolutely fine to wait one or two or even more weeks not to have a surgical abortion.  Residual tissue is NORMAL after a medical abortion, and is harmless.  The only reason to have a D&C is if it is a continuing pregnancy, or if you are having heavy bleeding and pain.  Otherwise most residual tissue will pass on its own normally if given time.  I have been doing medical abortions for almost a decade, and I almost never do a procedure for retained tissue.  I have seen less experienced doctor intervene when it is ocmpletely unnecessary.
I hope this is helpful,
Doctor Joan
