Understanding Bleeding in Early Pregnancy: Causes and What to Do
QuestionDear Dr. Joan,
i am really in a fix.. hoping that I can find the answer here..
This is my first pregnancy. My LMP is Nov 10, 2007. My home pregnancy turned positive on December 20, 2007. On Dec 22nd, i have had slight bleeding from afternoon. I went to a nearby dr. who advised an ultrasound and the impression was a threatened abortion and 5-mm gestational sac. It is said that the sac is in the lower uterine segment and most probably in the next few days, i may abort. The minimal bleeding (not as much that i would have during my periods) continued till date with slight abdominal cramps. My appointment with my doctor is still 3 days away and I am really tense on what is happening in my body. Please help me. Am i still pregnant?? or is it aborted?? if it is aborted, what could be the reason? and what are the measures that i should take next time to avoid this?
AnswerDear Jemmi,
An early miscarriage is very common (1/3) and very normal. I can't say whether you are miscarrying or not - you will have to have an evaluation and a follow up ultrasound and/or blood tests. The bleeding and abdominal cramping can be normal in an early pregnancy, or they can be signs of a miscarriage. You will need to see the doctor to get accurate information.
I hope this is helpful,
Doctor Joan
