Post-Abortion Bleeding: What to Expect & When to Worry
QuestionI was 8.3 weeks pregnant when i choose to end my pregnancy via medication abortion on the 31 of jan. I took the second set of pills and begin to pass large clots the following day. I continued to bleed for 8 days no heavier then a normal period. which I was told should only last 2 weeks. After the 8 days of bleeding, I continued to spot brown discharge only upon wiping till the 15 of feb. I had a follow up appt. on the 14 via ultrasound and the doctor told me everything looked normal and told me i could resume normal activities including sex. She told me not to expect a period for at least another 3 weeks. On the morning of the 15 of feb me and my boyfriend decided to have protected sex, I began bleeding during sex we stopped and ever since then I have bleeding with clots similar to a heavy period which is more bleeding since the procedure started it is now going on 3 days of this. Is this my period and is this normal since it has been longer than 2 weeks and the us said normal? How long should I expect to bleed like this for?
AnswerYou can have bleeding up to 8 weeks after a medical abortion. Having sex can make bleeding heavier because it makes the uterus contract. You should not be having unprotected intercourse. It is very easy to get pregnant during this time. You should be using a reliable form of contraception.
