Post-Abortion Bleeding: What to Expect After a Procedure

Question
i had an abortion on sept 19, i was 7 weeks 2 days pregnant. i went for my followup on oct 23 and everything was good, until my doctor said my uterus was larger than what it should have been, he made me take a preg test and it was negative. so i started my period on nov 2 and it is very heavy. the bleeding is very watery and there have been alot of clots, nothing larger than a quarter so i dont think its anything to worry about.. but i was just wondering if this is normal for a first period after an abortion, and could the reason my uterus was large be because maybe not everything was emptyed out during the abortion, and during the bleeding afterwards? i didnt go to work yesterday because the bleeding was just too constant and heavy.

Answer
Hi, Megan,

This sounds like something that needs to be looked into. It is very possible that you had an incomplete abortion. Clots could be additional material, or not. This situation could indicate a possible infection, which can be life-threatening or cause pelvic inflammatory disease, which can lead to infertility in the future. The larger uterus could be inflammation. This type of thing cannot be diagnosed over the internet, not even by a doctor. Please go see a doctor immediately (someone other than the person who did the procedure) and get some answers. Please let me know what you find out, and please don't take any more chances. Abortion is not safe. Take care.
