Post-Abortion Recovery: What to Expect After a Non-Surgical Abortion

Question
QUESTION: I had a non-surgical abortion last month. I have taken the main pill on 28th Feb and the subsequent pills on 2nd March. This was done because I was diagnosed with Blighted Ovum. LMP was 15 December.

After this I got normal bleeding for 10 days, I also had clotting on the first day. A few days after the bleeding had stopped; I revisited the Gynecologist and got a Sonography done to check whether the abortion was complete. This result showed that the abortion was complete and nothing was remaining inside the ovary.
Now, I am having my first period which started on 22nd March. I am having very heavy bleeding on this period as well, had slight clotting today. I normally have heavy bleeding during my periods but this is too heavy, far beyond normal.

Is this normal?  Do I need to visit the Gynec once more? Shall I have problems in future because of this?

ANSWER: Hello Martha from India,

I am afraid that this problem is difficult to evaluate by the internet.  The best thing is for you to see your Gynecologist and have an examination and possibly a repeat ultrasound.  It is possible that you may have some retained products from the medical abortion that is causing the bleeding.  It is too soon for you to have a normal period after a miscarriage.  Usually it will take 4-6 weeks for the pregnancy to resolve and for the ovary to reset.  Then it takes 4 weeks before the period starts.

QUESTION: Can you please let me know when I can plan for a baby again? Based on my dates.

Answer
Hello Again,

As I answered previously, you will need to see your Gynecologist to evaluate for retained products.  You will not be able to become pregnant for 6-8 weeks after the pregnancy resolves completely (when the bHCG goes down to zero).  If you have retained products, that will delay things until the retained products are shed or your doctor goes in and removes them by D&C.
