Post-Medical Abortion: Understanding Bleeding & Clots

Question
if u remember my story, i am living in a Gulf country were traditions might kill a woman if she gets pregnant without getting married. on january 9th, my medical abortion was successful finally and i had to test myself 5 times and then visited a doctor, had an ultrasound, and said that there is nothing in me.
but on the 24th of jan, i bled for only two hours and i saw a big clot coming out around 7cm tall. and since then i didnt saw a single drop of blood. What was this? and when should my menstrual period begins?
thx!

Answer
Noor,
The clot that you saw was the lining of the pregnancy - the tissue that gets ready for the developing pregnancy.  You were far too early to see an embryo.  The bleeding may stop and start, and it could be spotting, regular bleeding, or clots.  This is all completely normal.  It can be hard to know when your next period starts, as it is hard to differentiate between the bleeding from the abortion and your next period.  Your period will regulate over the next few months.
I hope this is helpful,
Doctor Joan
