Post-Abortion Pain & Recovery: What to Expect After a Procedure

Question
Hi, I have a quick question for you. I had an  abortion procedure (where i was asleep)  on April 25th. I was prescribed antibiotics to take for the 3 following days.  Which i took Sunday - Tuesday. On Wednesday I started to have pains (not horrible, but enough for me to keep noticing) and they continued through Thursday so i went back to see the doctor. I was given another sonogram to insure that no tissue was left. I am not bleeding either, just having pains. I was examined and told that my cervix must still be open/swollen but never got a definite answer on why i was having pain, since he seems confused on why i was having pain too. I was prescribed AMOX TR-K CLV 500-125MG. I am aware that it is an antibiotic.   Is this to help keep preventing me from getting an infection since my cervix is still open or is it prescribed  for helping something else?  Thank you.

Answer
Hi Kelly,
It's difficult to answer this question without examining you or seeing your medical records.  From the way you describe it, they gave you antibiotics to prevent you from getting an infection, or with some concern that the pain could be an early sign of an infection.  Doctors tend to be conservative in these situations - it's better to take antibiotics early and prevent a possible infection than it is to wait and see whether an infection definitely develops, since it can then be more severe.
I hope this is helpful,
Doctor Joan
