Understanding Irregular Periods After Abortion: What to Expect

Question
QUESTION: i had an abortion on 31st of March 2009 and it had to be repeated twice cos of early pregency.
after two weeks i did check up and found out that it was still missed abortion.
so i had to go for another procedure again on 26th of April 2009 and i did the post abortion check up after two weeks and the ultrasound result was fine except some linings inside and also the bleeding was stopped.  The doctor told me that my body can excrete those linings itself.
And i got my period 4 weeks after my abortion for 7 days which is heavier than my normal periods before my abortion.
Then i did work out with weightlifting two days after my period.
i did work out for 2 days continuously on 6th and 7th of June and i went out in cool evening with light clothing and catch cold abit and right after that i got high body temperature on the night of 8th June and i was sweating the whole night but that fever just disappeared after that morning and i am bleeding again from 9th of June till now i am writing to u.today is 10th June 2009.

is it just irregular period or something wrong with my uterus?

anyway i will try to go and see the gynecologist on 14th of June.

but if you suggest me to go and see tomorrow then i will have to.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR TIME AND LOOKING TO SEE YOUR ANSWER.
REGARDS,

ANSWER: Hello, michelle,

If I understand you correctly, you have had four surgeries into your uterus. This will make you particularly prone to infection, and there is a good chance that's why you had a fever, although that could also be due to a flu bug or something of the sort.

I can't tell you from here just how much of an emergency your situation is. The fact that you are scheduled to see your doctor on the 14th sounds good. I would, however, urge you to see someone other than the person who provided the surgeries. Abortion is medically unethical. If your gynecologist is the one who provided the abortions, then I recommend you find someone else. He shouldn't have missed twice like he did, either.

Weightlifting ordinarily would be good for you (and it's something I have done myself, quite a bit), but given the stress on your body right now, I would recommend that you hold off on further stress.

If the period you had four weeks after your abortion was a normal period, then it would seem that bleeding right now is not a normal period. You didn't say if you had a period at the end of May. If you didn't, that puts you at six weeks, and I don't know of any normal cycle in a woman that is that long.

If you want reassurance and feel the need to go to the doctor sooner, please do. If not, then unless you show more symptoms, the 14th is probably OK. From here, I can't say for certain. But if you develop fever and chills again, I would recommend you go right away.

The doctor should examine your uterus carefully. This is one reason why I recommend against going to the same doctor who provided the abortion. He won't want to admit he hurt you in any way, and you need a second opinion, from someone who doesn't have a personal interest in finding you healthy.

I hope this helps. Please let me know how you do.

QUESTION: Dear,
Sorry to have made you missunderstood for my abortion case.
briefly i had three times surgeries, not four times.
the first two time ,the doctor made me with sleeping injection and (after one month)the last time was with anaesthetic injection.

and after two weeks i did post abortion check up with another doctor in another hospital.
and the ultrasound scan and the result was fine.
Also the bleeding was stopped two weeks after.

33 days after my abortion, i got my period for 7 days.
and 2 days after my period, i did work out 2 days continuously and i statrted bleeding again from 9th of JUNE to till now. i also had fever just one night (8th JUNE)

according to your answer, why should i get infection and something wrong even the result was ok after two weeks check up.

so it means that i can't rely on the two weeks checkup and i have to do the check up again.

may be i think it's Cause of the repeated procedures for my abortion.

thanks alot,
i am really upset with my situation.
and i have to go for another check up.

PS...all the check up that i did was with different doctors.
and i had to do the three times procedure with the same doctor as my situation was no choice.
But the last time there was one more senior doctor.

thanks alot,

Answer
Michelle,

Thank you for the clarification.

When you explained that the doctor told you that everything was OK, he was talking about whether there was tissue left behind. An infection can be of the uterus itself, and wouldn't necessarily show up in an ultrasound. The fact you had a fever may or may not be relevant, but you can't rule out the idea that it could be because of the abortion. You were prompted to mention it for a reason. I have talked to doctors who said that when a patient says, "Oh, and by the way" they need to listen because it is possible that this will be the clue to unravel what is going on.

Whenever someone puts something into the body (like into the uterus), there is the possibility of infection. I don't care how careful they are to sterilize something. The moment the sterilizing is complete, the instrument is no longer sterile.

There are a couple of things I hope the doctor will look at. I hope he will look to see if you have an abnormally high count of white blood cells. Also, he should look for specific infections. In particular, I hope he will look at the possibility of pelvic inflammatory disease. This is very common. It will be of the lining of the uterus. There is also the possibility of sexually transmitted diseases, and a woman can get one from an abortion.

I don't know how things are in UAE, but in the United States, abortionists are careless. They do so many things that could cause an infection it's not funny. The bad part about it is that the risk is completely unnecessary. Abortions aren't being done because a woman has a medical condition. Ordinarily, when any procedure is done, it's because the risk of not doing it is greater than the risk of doing it. With abortion, almost always there is a health woman with a normal pregnancy, so there is no medical reason to do an abortion. Abortions are done for nonmedical reasons. This is one reason abortion is medically unethical to begin with. The doctor is supposed to abide by the principle, First do no harm (primum non nocere). The medical profession itself has become corrupted. A woman should never have to submit to this kind of risk, a risk that can compromise her future and her life. We deserve better.

The other thing that needs to be checked is why you started bleeding again when you worked out. I imagine you find weightlifting to be very therapeutic emotionally. However, when you lift weights, you often tighten your abdominal muscles. This pushes on the uterus, and if there is still blood in the uterus, this may cause it to come out. Blood may accumulate because your uterus has been injured. This is another thing that needs to be checked into. Abortionists operate blind on some very soft tissue with a sharp knife. Cutting the uterus itself is very common. It can also give another avenue for infection.

I hope you will find the answers you seek. Just remember, if you are having unusual symptoms, there is a reason. Things are not normal. Don't give up!
