Post-Abortion Bleeding & Pregnancy Risk: What to Expect

Question
I had an aspiration(syringe) abortion on Jan 24th. I was 38 days along. On Jan 28th to Feb 3rd I had what would be considered a normal period for me. I cramped which was alleviated by 800mg Mortrin.  Could this have been my period? I also had unprotected sex on the 3rd and 7th of Feb. Am I at risk for another pregnancy? I have not been spotting or anything since the "period". I did not bleed or spot after the procedure.

Answer
The normal period usually comes 4 to 6 weeks after the procedure.  The initial bleeding last for 2 weeks then stops.  You can get get pregnant.
You are suppose to use condoms for 2 weeks to prevent infection.  You can take Emergency contraception pill now.  I recommend you do that and then take a pregnant test in 2 weeks.

We have our patients who are under 42 days pregnant perform a urine pregnancy test 1 week after the procedure.  It should be negative.  You should call the facility that performed your procedure, especially if you had no bleeding.  We tell our patients to call if no bleeding after 5 days.
