QuestionI just had acrylic overlays put on 2 days ago. I have really nice nails and I
normally get a regular french manicure. BUT, I usually end up having to redo
the french manicure every few days myself because of chipping. I decided to
give this a try and see if I liked it. The nail tech just put acrylic on top of my
real nails. The first day, they were very sore. She used this drill/buffer thing
to roughen up my real nails. I'm concerned that my real nails are now ruined.
Altho I really like the strength of the acrylic on top and I like how they look, I
just don't want to risk my real nails being totally messed up at the same time.
How long can you wear acrylic overlay w/out it damaging your real nail? If I
take this off in two weeks, will my nails be gross now or will they still look the
same? And if I get a regular french manicure, will my nails still look nice in
having one or do they now have to grow out all over again? Thank you!
AnswerDear Jaclyn,
First, I am concerned that you went to an NSS (Non Standard Salon). Electric files (aka drill/dremel) should NEVER touch the natural nail! This causes damage to the natural nail. That they did so, leaves me inclined to think that they use MMA (a toxic/illegal acrylic).

I must first urge you to find another technician, one that is qualified, licensed and certified to use an electtric file if she/he indeed has one.
With regards to QUALITY Acrylic, applied PROPERLY by a conscientious and well trained technician; it will not damage your nails. It need never be soaked off, and can be refilled indefinately, in any fashion you choose in either a clear overlay or with a permanent french.
Since I'm assuming that your nails are damaged since an electric file was used on the natural nails, I think it would be best if you let sleeping dogs lie and refill over the existing product. Were you to remove it, you'd expose the damage and cause yourself discomfort.
Nail enhancements should be refilled/rebalanced every 2 to 3 weeks. Letting them go longer leaves them susceptible to breakage as they will become unbalanced.
I hope that this information answers your questions.
