Gel vs. Acrylic Nails: Understanding the Difference & Avoiding Scams

I recently had new nails put on after a 2 year break from acrylics due to lfiting and nail damage.  I specifically requested gel which I have never had before, in hopes that I woul dnot have the previous problem.  The tech used a liquid and a poweder marked "gel" and applied it the same as acrylic over the tips.  I get the feeling what I got was acrylic...
