Gel vs. Acrylic Nails: Understanding the Difference & Identifying Potential Issues

Question
Hi,
I recently went to local salon for what I thought was Gel nails. I've been researching on internet and think perhaps, I may have gotten ripped off.
Started with white powder and liquid to form nail tip, then pink powder and liquid for do the "gel " overlay. Went under heat lamp for few minutes. Buffed with a drill, clear gel shine color , lamp again.
Does this sound like the process for gel nails?
I read where you mentioned custom blending and was interested in that as opposed to the pink and white manicure.
I rather have an opague whitish color to the entire nail.
can you recommed any options or a salon in my area.
nj zip is 08080.
thankyou so much

Answer
Hi Gina!

I'm sad to say, you did get ripped off! Its not even close to the process of gel nails. Gel does not come in a liquid and powder form.

I am having a heck of a time finding a qualified nail technician close to you what are some other surrounding towns or zip codes you would be willing to go to? I found 1 Master Technician, but doesn't mean she does custom blended manicures.. I found a technician in Cherry Town who is qualified in everything. I'm just going to have you go to this website, www.creativenaildesign.com Go to salon and spa locator and find a technician wherever you want. You will see under their address and phone number that there is a list of qualifications, look for the custom blended manicure to be checked.

I want to make sure you go to a technician that can take care of you properly. Someone willing to work with you. You can tell someone enjoys their job when they are qualified for everything. So call them first, tell them your situation, see if they are will to work with you, I don't see why not!

I am mainly worried that you might have MMA Acrylic. If that is the case, you need to find a technician who would be willing to take the time to soak them off.. It will take a long time.. She may be able to just file them down and custom blend over top of it, but I feel more comfortable with the product off. That way you can't injure you natural nails. I'm sure you have heard me ranting and raving over MMA already, but please educate yourself. http://www.nailsbydesign.homestead.com/MMA.html
If it turns out to be MMA, please report that salon to your State Board of Cosmetology.

Please let me know if you need any more help Gina!

Thanks!
