Acrylic Nails Chipping Quickly? Causes & Solutions

Question
Hi,
My daughter recently got a new full set of acrylics so she could  try to quit biting her nails.  Less than 4 days after getting the nails, 8 of them chipped and came off.  Why would this happen? Should I return to the salon to have the problem corrected?  This is our first experience with acrylics.

Thanks for your help.
Cindy

Answer
Hi Cindy.
A few reasons...
You mentioned she is a nail biter and depending on what the nail tech had to work with to begin with this could contribute to the chipping. Nail biters are the hardest clients since the biting can misshape nail beds and there is little nail plate to work with.
If she was extremely harsh on them playing sports etc..
Also acrylic is not permanent so if you use cleaning products wash dishes without gloves this can affect the adhesion as well. If she is on any birth control or medication this too can affect adhesion. Since you are putting a chemical in the body your nails and hair are the first place that shows this ingestion.
It is hard for me to say without seeing them. I would recommend you go back to the place you got them have a consultation with the nail tech and explain you are not happy. Most techs will offer to fix the work.
GOod luck
Might I suggest next time try a gel overlay. This is a layer of gel (clear or color) applied onto the natural nail. DO not go with tips for length. This doubles the chance of chipping and breaking on nail biters. Gel is very hard and stays super shiny( like glass). It is flexible unlike acrylic and bends with the natural nail and is super thin. It is a great way to grow out your nails and it is very hard to bite off and it always looks fabulous so you never want it off anyway!
