Acrylic Nail Injury: Infection Risk & Medical Necessity

Question
I recently pinched my acrylic nail at the base (while on the job) and the nurse sent me to the ER because she said the "glue" could cause an infection and I would need an antibiotic. Was this necessary?  I have had my nails for five years...with a fresh set being put on 6 months ago. MY workplace is very upset and wants to "dis-allow" women to have artificial nails.

Answer
I can't really answer your question fully because I don't know the extent of the damage of your natural nail.  But I can tell you that the nurse doesn't know anything about nail enhancements--there is no "glue" in an acrylic enhancement.  Unless she was somehow talking about the adhesive that holds a plastic tip in place.  But this adhesive is very similar to the liquid bandage or liquid stitches used in hospitals and doctors offices, so it's not the "glue" that's a problem.  If you pinched your enhancement, and it broke into your nail plate, *then* you could develop an infection because of the open wound.  You didn't specifically say that you'd done that, though.

If you've gone five years in this same job field, and this is the first injury to your nail, then you're doing pretty well!  I hate when situations like this cause such an overreaction--if it had happened and you weren't wearing enhancements, would the company ban natural nails too??  Honestly. :)

It wouldn't hurt to think about shortening your nails so you don't hurt yourself again (that is, if you wear them long).  Sometimes it's just safer that way!

I hope this is helpful.  Feel free to follow up if you have any more questions (and I hope your nail feels better soon!).
