QuestionI have been wearing some form of acrylic nails for at least 15 years. Under the nails on my right hand, it looks like the bottom of my natural nail has separated from the rest of the nail. Do you what causes this and what I do to fix the problem.
Thank you.
AnswerWhat you are experiencing is called onycholosis, and is caused by trauma to the nail plate, and when it's after wearing enhancements applied improperly, it can be from being ripping or prying off your acrylic, or from your tech over-aggressively filing on the natural nail.
The best way to get them back to normal is to keep them clipped as short as possible, and apply a good penetrating cuticle conditioning treatment. I like to use Solar Oil by CND.
If you decide to have your nails done again, research and interview the prospective tech like you would an employee. Nail enhancements are not damaging to your nails, nail technicians with bad habits are doing the damage! So be careful choosing the right tech :)
Good luck! Please let me know if I can be of further assistance. :)
