Understanding Gel vs. Acrylic Nails: Safety & Nail Growth

Question
Hi Lynette

Ok.... I have been a nailbiter my whole life, and decided to try gel nails (as I don't like the look of acrylics) for the first time, to help me grow my nails out. I have figured out that I don't have true gels, but acrylics, which is very disappointing... now I am concerned they may be MMA.

Nail was buffed with an electric buffer. Acrylic tips were applied with nail glue, then the brush was dipped in a liquid and an unlabelled powder, before being smoothed onto my nails. The nails were manually filed with a file (not with an electric file).

I paid $35 in a Canadian salon to have them done. Do they sound like MMA nails?

If so, my questions are:

- is it better to soak them in acetone nail polish remover, for 2 hours or so, and remove them?
- or better to grow them out, just keeping them quite short to avoid breaking them? My concern is that as they grow out, they may start to lift from the bottom...
- or better to go to a professional salon to get them removed?

I feel very annoyed, as I should have known better... you usually get what you pay for. Please help me determine what steps I should take?

Cheers
C

Answer
C,
I would not recommend soaking the MMA off. I am sure that is what is on your nails.
Lightly buff them as they grow out, being careful to not buff the natural nail. Keep the product thin and the nails shorter to prevent snapping and tearing your nail off the bed.
Yes, you do get what you pay for.
Once you see liquid and powder, it is NOT gel. I get so annoyed with these tactics to the unsuspecting public.
If you can find a reputable tech, he or she will help you transition back to natural nails OR apply their product.
best of luck -- let me know what you do .
buenos dias,
Lynnette
