Acrylic vs. Gel Nails: Which is Best for Healthy Nails?

Question
I get my nails done often. I usually get acrylic nails. I have been looking into gel nails. I had a couple of questions. I want something that is not going to turn yellow, lift or have my real nails look crappy(thin) after they are taken off. What would u recommend and why? Thank you so much.

Answer
Hi Andrea! Thanks for your question ;)

It doesn't matter what TYPE of nails you have applied, what matters is the tech applying them, and the products s/he uses.  Liquid and Powder (AKA Acrylic) gets a bad rap as being damaging and all around not-good-for-you.  But it's not the liquid and powder enhancements.  It's the tech overfiling your nail plate when applying and rebalancing (aka FILL), and peeling them off to remove them.  These remove TONS of layers of your nail plate, and this is what makes them thin and peel and in general "look like crap."

A highly trained nail tech will use product that will never yellow, or lift, or damage your own natural nails, no matter if she is using liquid and powder, or UV Gels.

Also, a quick FYI for you to pass on to your friends: The reason that no one product is better than the other is because they are all in the same chemical family.  It's called ACRYLIC. ;)  The only difference in any of these products is how they cure, or harden, and how they crosslink (which is what MAKES them hard).  Gel has more crosslinks, making them non-porous, liquid and powder has less, making them porous, and not solvent proof (which is why you only use non-acetone removers with them.).

So for my final recommendation? Really do your homework when you get your nails done, or get a referral from an expert- look at my page for my e-mail ;)

Good Luck! Heather
