Sterling Silver vs. Silver Plated: Which is Best for Jewelry?

Question
I am trying to start my own homebased jewelry business.  In regards to quality, what is the difference between silverplated findings and sterling silver findings? My jewelry is primarily glass, swarovski crystal, japanese seed beads, and sterling silver.  Would it change the quality of my jewelry if I used silverplated materials such as headpins, eyepins, jumprings, etc.  I would still use sterling in the beads, clasp, and chain.
Sincerely,
Sherry Smith

Answer
Hello Sherry,

The difference between the two is that one is solid silver and the other is plated with silver - which is in essence a very thin coating over another base type metal usually brass.
So the problem that you will find with pated pieces is that it will oxidise - blacken - faster as the base metals properties overpower the plate. Also if you damage the plated suface then the base metal shows through.

In the case of solid silver, if you damage the surface, then it is silver all the way through. Also you will find that it is more resistant to oxidation.

In my opinion, the solid silver will be much easier to manipulate, bend, mould etc..........Thus, my choice would be the solid product at all times, however this may be cost exclusive for you.

Hope this is of help. Cheers, P
