Understanding Sterling Silver Sheets: Gauges, Sizes & Best Practices

Question
Hi, I was just wondering what the different terminologies mean in regards to sterling silver in sheets. I want to get a raw piece of sterling silver, thin enough to be able to form it myself w/ various hand tools - but able to be engraved and used as a substantial charm or pendant. I am confused to what the guage size means and the prices..because they vary on different websites. What is the best gauge and measurements for the silver I need?
Thanks
Brielle

Answer
Hello Brielle,

I would be considering getting a few pieces
0.8mm, 1.0mm and 1.2mm.
These are the most common bench sizes of metal and then you can practice and play on each. You probably need 50mm X 50mm of each to get started.
However you may have an idea of what you wish to make already, so you may want to get a piece that your design will fit into.

Hope that helps.
Cheers, P
