QuestionI have a 3 carat channel set CZ eternity band set in gold. It had to be cut off during a complicated pregnancy with unusual swelling. It was cut at the bottom and is a bit jagged now there(about 1 mm space),but the rest of the ring is in great shape. I asked a jewelry repair service if they could add gold to complete the band in that space and repair the ring. He told me it was a "suicide mission" and the CZ's would explode under the heat as he saudered it. He said no repair was possible. I would really like to try if it's possible. Your expertise, please. Thanks! Jennifer
AnswerHello Jennifer,
CZ are man made stones rather than naturally occuring.
If youre ring contained diamond, zircon, white sapphire etc then you could re-solder the shank, adding extra gold if necessary.
Unfortunately in this case CZs just wont take the heat that is created whilst soldering and in my experience will either discolour or shatter or both......
I guess you have a few options.
A. You could try it and see what the outcome is - whihc will likely be as described.
B. You could have the stones removed first, the shank repaired and then the CZs re-set.
C. You could have the same ring re-made from scratch, perhaps using a natural stone, which will have better lustre and wearability.
Hope that is of help.
Good luck, P
