Understanding Sterling Silver 825: Purity and Origin

Question
just read an answer on all expert about sterling 825, none the wiser, I have an item with sterling 825 on it, what is the percentage of silver in this, which country of origin do you think it might come from, I would appreciate some knowledgeable comment about this, thanking you in advance
dali

Answer
G'day Dali and many thanks for your query.

This indicates the number of parts per thousand of pure metal, so in this case, 825 shows the item has 825 parts of pure silver mixed with 175 parts of other metals to make the jewelry.

The world standard is Sterling Silver which is 925 so this item is substantially lower in quality, and would basically be considered a low quality grade.

You might also like to add this query to my Jewelry Forum at http://www.online-jewelry-appraisals.net/jewelry-forum/ as other may have had a similar problem. Can't hurt anyway and who knows what answers you may get.

Hope this helps...
