QuestionMy wife bought me this ring for our wedding about three months ago; I have been wearing the ring since the wedding in June.

Today I noticed that the band had split at the bottom of the ring - a clean break all the way through the band. What would cause that to happen? I also noticed that the gold seems to be wearing away all around the ring; is it possible that the ring is actually gold plated Sterling Silver? The markings on the inside of the band say "10K SR", I figured that meant 10 carat but what does the 'SR' mean? There's also some other what looks like cursive script but it is very tiny and I can't read it.
AnswerGreetings,
The reason that there is a clean break is that it has split through the joint.
This shouldn't happen so soon, But I'm guessing it was what is known as a dry joint.....it just need to be re-soldered. Properly this time.
10 Karat gold is quite pale and a bit drab, so it is possible that it has been plated with a higher Karat of gold to make it brighter and more yellow. SR could mean standard or set ring......who knows.
The other script could actually be the makers mark etc or style code.
Hope that helps, P
