Decoding Jewelry Markings: Understanding MXC/MXCC on Abalone Rings
QuestionI recently received a very nice abalone ring. I'm not sure what material it is made of. The ring looks like brass, but I'm not sure. The inside markings of the ring are: MXC with a half moon next to the C. Or it is MXCC. Can you tell me what those markings mean? Or direct me to someone who does know. Cathy
AnswerHello cathy and thank you for your inquiry. Abalone rings were and are a specialty of the Mexican jewelry trade and I expect your ring is one of those which is what the MX may stand for. The CC May be the designers name. It was the practice on Mexican sterling to have the assay office and the designers initials on all pieces of sterling jewelry. There were some brass pieces also marked, but not with an assay mark. You may be able to find out more information in a Mexican Silver Trade and Hallmark book by Bille Hougart - probably in your local library or local book store. Hope this helps and enjoy your ring.
