Decoding A&P Gold Ring Mark: Meaning & History

Question
have a 14k gold ring w/ emeral setting, between to diamonds. it has a mark inside A & P 14k what is that mark stand for? think P is in referance to plumb, but not sure . could it be a jewelers mark?

Answer
Dear lason,

The use of plumb with gold was started near 1980 when the marking regulations changed in the USA. Newer rings do not have the "p" because newer jewelry is up to the standards and older jewelry before the change is no longer in stock.  The exception might be with items from a pawn shop, antique or estate jewelry seller.  The mark would have the "p" with the 14k and not with the other marks.

Yours looks like the A& P is a manufacturers stamp and the other mark of 14k simply says the ring is 14 karat gold.

God Bless and Peace.  Thomas.
