Questionhello, i recently fell and my beautiful blue moonstone ring got scratched. how can i fix this.. i have a dremel set and was wondering if i may buff out the scratches with a buffer pad and some sort of polish that will not damage this beautiful stone. with sincerest thanks, susan
AnswerSusan, I would not suggest trying to repolish the stone yourself. Why? There are several steps to getting past the scratches and regaining a perfect polish. All along the way, the shape of the stone must be retained to keep the dome needed for the best view of moonstone.
My suggestion is to take the ring to a jeweler...call first. Ask if they can repolish a moonstone. That way, the work will be done properly. Another but very possible resource is a rock shop. Rock Shops cater to those who cut and polish gemstones all the time. A rock shop may very well have someone do to the work for you.
The question is this: Is the stone removed or left in the ring for polishing. If set into a bezel, a ring of metal around the waist of the stone, removal is tricky and may mean extra work on the ring to reset the moonstone. If set in prongs, the stone may be removed easily for repolishing.
If bezel set and not dismounted to polish, the polishing will not reach to the very edge of the stone at the metal rim. If scratches are as usual and mostly on the upper or top of the stone, polishing in place will work just fine.
I do hope this helps you get that lovely back to a fine polish. The blue ones are my favorite and the better of the family overall.
