Replacing a Lost Diamond with a Cubic Zirconia in Your Engagement Ring

Question
After 35 years of marriage, the small diamond in my gold engagement ring fell out and was lost. I'd love to put a larger cubic zirconia stone in the ring and I see that loose stones are available for purchase. I have no idea how a loose stone would be set into my ring and if this IS possible, who might be willing to do this for me. (The ring matches my wedding ring which I want to keep, so I'd prefer not to just buy a whole new ring.)

Thank-you in advance for your time and help.

Answer
Derri, thanks for the question.

The only way to know what size and what labor is needed to put the new stone in you ring is to take it to a jeweler.  Check around for a reputable business and be sure there is a bench jeweler in-house. The bench jeweler is the one who actually does the work and can best tell you what is needed to provide and set the new stone.

For a larger stone than the one which was lost, it is very likely the setting will have to be replaced with a larger one. Depending on the ring, this may or may not be possible within reason.  Generally, with an engagement ring, if the band part is ok, the center setting may be easily removed and a larger one installed. Then the larger stone may be set and you are set to go and enjoy the ring.

If you do get a CZ, please ask for the best cut stone possible. One brand is Signity and those CZ's do outshine the others because the stones are well cut and polished.

I cannot begin to suggest a cost for this work without haveing your ring in my hands. A good jeweler should be able to provide an estimate while you are there and some idea of the turn around time.

Best wishes in getting the new sparkly stone!
