Authenticity Alert: How to Verify Your Alexandrite Ring
QuestionI purchased a gemstone ring from ebay. It is suppost to be real mined from the earth alexandrite, but I know it isn't. I already own a piece that I had looked at for athenticity, and have researched this stone for years. The stone I got looks more like a smokey quartz, but has color change. I took it to my local jeweler who is a certified gemoligist and he says theres a 95% certainty that it isn't alexandrite. I already figured this out on my own. I wanted him to give me an idea what it could be, but he basically said it would not be cost effective to see what it is, and was kinda rude. He said it looks more like a created color change sapphire. I want to figure out what it is, so I will know if it is worth wearing. How can I tell what the hardness of this stone is, and what it could possibly be made of? He said it isn't glasss but a gemstone, but that was it. I am willing to pay for the services but would prefer someone who doesn't talk down to you like you are dumb. Also you had mentioned in another post that you can take a colored gem class, how can I find out about this and is it something that is available over the internet. This is the item # of the ring I purchased and has some good photos of the stone 350150037583 the link should work from the front page of ebay.
AnswerHI GENENE,
I'M NOT REAL SURE I GOT TO SEE THE RING YOU BOUGHT. BUT WHAT I DID SEE DOESN'T LOOK PROMISING. ALL THE "ALEXANDERITES" LOOK AT LEAST TREATED AND NONE LOOK REAL BRAZILIAN ALEX. THE DESCRIPTIONS BY YOU AND THE GEMOLOGIST SURELY SOUND LIKE A TREATED STONE. I WOULD HAVE TO PHYSICALLY TEST AND EXAMINE THE STONE TO GIVE YOU A POSITIVE ANSWER. I WOULD SUGGEST YOU FIND A BETTER GEMOLOGIST OR SEND THE STONE TO G.I.A. FOR IDENTIFICATION. WILL THE COMPANY REFUND THE MONEY IF IT IS NOT "NATURAL ALEXANDERITE"?
I NOTICED A TREATMENT THEY CALL 'MYSTIC TOPAZ' ON THOSE TWO RED SUPPOSEDLY ALEXANDERITE AND DIAMOND EARRINGS HE HAD FOR SALE. THE BEST THING TO DO IS SEND IT TO G.I.A. FOR AN I.D. I DON'T KNOW HOW MUCH THEY CHARGE NOW SO ASK BEFORE SENDING. LET ME KNOW WHAT HAPPENS.
