Understanding Diamond Color Variations: What to Tell Family

Question
I just had my grandmother's 1.2 caret diamond set into a Tacori style ring. I was totally unaware that the diamond was M in color until I noticed that it is a different color than the other diasmonds in the setting. The ring appraised for $11,500 (around 5,000 for the diamond itself).  my question is this: what can I tell my freinds and family when they notice the color difference? It is a beautiful, flawless to the naked eye diamond that you have to really look to see the yellow difference in good lighting. Are older diamonds more of a yellow tint? The diamond means alot to me to use but I want to feel comfortable wearing it too.  Thanks

Answer
You can always tell them it is close to a canary yellow diamond which is extremely rare. Yellow diamonds today are in demand and command higher prices depending on its intensity of color, being M in color its more like a brownish yellow. dont even worry about it, it has a lot of sentimental value, if it is truly old 1920's it may be an old mine cut diamond which can be RECUT and sometimes depending on proportions the diamond may become whiter.....its worth looking into if you are really un happy.....I would be happy wearing something my grandmother had and was proud to wear with its long lasting history.......
all the best,
