Diamond Color Change After Ring Repair: What Happened?
QuestionI recently took my wedding ring,(which i bought in an antique store) to a jeweler to have camel backs put in it. My ring is a marquise cut piece of jade in the middle with 2 diamonds on each side. After picking it up i noticed that the outer edge of one diamond was almost razor sharp, and there was another that didn't sparkle like the others anymore. The color looks greyish the light doesn't pass through it like before, it is very noticeable. So my question is could the change have occured when they heated up the band? Also what is your opinion as to why the edge of the another diamond being razor sharp now? Or is this just my imagination? Thank you for all your help.
Answerrachel-
the stones may not have been diamonds, and if you are sure they were, then they might have burned the diamond. This can happen when not enough flux, or NO flux is put on the ring to cover the diamonds and gold. This can happen...the diamond may appear to have a HAZE look to it, its a burnt covering....this can be repaired by sending the diamond to a diamond cutter and polishing the diamond with another diamond or diamond dust.....in your case since the diamond is small it would not be worthwhile...without looking at it and actually seeing it its hard to make a determination but that is my guess.
good luck. The razor sharpness of the other diamond may be that it was damaged and you didnt notice it, and maybe now thats its clean you do notice it....in any case the jeweler who took the job in, should have told you about this...if he didnt he should replace both stones for you if hes reputable...
all the best
