Selling Diamonds & Jewelry: What to Watch Out For
Questioni went to jewelry exchange to sell a ring but i didn't want to part with the diamond stones so the jeweler offered to take the stones out and just buy the gold. When he gave the stones back they were white dense cloudy they looked like plastic. they were extremely brilliant 10 - 25 pointers. He gave them back to me as if there was nothing wrong with them. Well I was a deer in head-lights for a few days and still trying to forget how much i loved the stones. Can anything be done to save them. I believe they were damaged by his heat torch trying to get them out of the ring. the smaller stones he gave back were okay he said those he popped out. what do you think.
AnswerHi Randi,
I am afraid without before and after pictures of the stones in question, there isn't much that can be done. I can tell you that a jewelers torch typically has no adverse effects on natural untreated diamonds. If you had an appraisal done on the ring that listed the color and clarity details of the diamonds in question, and a new appraisal says they are no longer the same stones, then you could pursue the matter. Short of before and after pictures, or an appraisal (ideally with pictures) I am sorry to say there isn't anything you can do.
You can always call and speak to the manager of the store and see what the response is.
