Identifying Vintage Ring Markings: A Guide to Hallmarks

Question
Hi! I have a ring with several interesting markings that I hope you can help me to identify. From left to right on the band:
Mark: "P. ??(looks like a squiggle) S."
Mark: crown
Mark: "18"
Mark: sideways anchor
Mark: "b"
I would appreciate any information you could give me. Thank you!
Tracy

Answer
G'day Tracy and many thanks for your query.

The jewelry has classic UK (British) Hallmarks where the first letters are the Maker's Mark. The Crown is the quality stamp to prove it is what it is stamped. In this case 18ct gold. The side anchor is the assay office mark for Birmingham and the letter 'b' is the date letter.

There is a Free Hallmarking Course available here:

You might also like to add this query to my Jewelry Forum at http://www.online-jewelry-appraisals.net/jewelry-forum/ as other may have had a similar problem. Can't hurt anyway and who knows what answers you may get.

Hope this helps...
