thanks sharon

Answer
G'day Sharon and many thanks for your query.

This is a standard mark for 9ct gold and the letters are just the Makers mark and is quite normal.

Without full UK (British) hallmarks - but I don't know where you live or where you obtained this item in the first place - there is no way of telling how old it is.

Generally, near the Padlock clasp on the end links is a small tab which should have the full hallmark, but often, especially in antique or vintage jewelry, item were made up from older and longer chains (stamped on every link) so would not have the full hallmark anyway.

Without that we cannot say for certain. This padlock mark is fairly common and modern - that's why I am wondering if it has been made up from an old chain.

You need to take it to your local FRIENDLY appraiser and have a full written appraisal done, both for value and for description. It would be a shame to lose it.

You might also like to add this query to my Jewelry Forum at http://www.online-jewelry-appraisals.net/jewelry-forum/ as other may have had a similar problem. Can't hurt anyway and who knows what answers you may get.

Hope this helps...
