Understanding Gold Markings on Jewelry: 14kt E Explained

Question
I recently acquired a bracelet that has a stamp on the clasp that reads:
Italy
14kt
E
What does this mean?  Is it electroplated or is this the jeweler's ID?  The gold is a bit darker than some pieces I have but I understand some jewelers "dip" the end piece in gold to add depth and luster.  Please advise.. Thanks!!

Answer
Good question. I would have this tested If I were you. Stamps are deceiving. I use a tri electronics electrical conductivity tester. For me these work the best. If you cant find soeone to test it Iam happy to do it for you. These tests run about 35.00 dollars plus shipping and handling if you dont mind sending the ring to me otherwise, you can find someone local to do it.
