18K White Gold Bracelet Appraisal Dispute: Is it Real?

Question
My grandmother came back from Bari, Italy with a gift for my brother and I. Two 18k White gold bracelets. recently somethings have come up in the family and i went to go appraise my bracelet to see if I could lend a hand to my household. The guy behind the counter without event pulling out a magnifying lens took one look at the hallmark on it and said it was gold plated. I did a little research on the mark it bears, 750. It said it was 18kt gold and if something is gold plated it usually has GEP next to it. My question is there is another mark on this bracelet that I haven't found anywhere on my searches online, to the left of the gold marking which kinda looks like this ( * 1947 AR ). I looked for silver hallmarks just to be safe and have no idea what this means. Can anyone help me?

Answer
G'day Anthony and many thanks for your query.

These other marks are simply the Maker's Marks or design style or model identification marks and have no bearing as to Hallmarking. The 750 is the mark for 18ct gold, but why not ask you grandmother for her receipts? This should show the quality and features.

However you have another problem, as you are confusing an appraisal, for what something is worth.

These are two completely different things.

An appraisal SHOULD be called an Insurance Appraisal, because that's what it is for.

It provides a value based on replacement - up to 12 months ahead - in the event of loss or theft etc. It has nothing to do with price really.

There is a very good article on my website you might like to read. You can find it here:

You might also like to add this query to my blog at http://how2valuejewelry.com/ as other may have had a similar problem. Can't hurt anyway and who knows what answers you may get.

Hope this helps...
