Identifying Antique Silver Spoons: Understanding Jewelry Maker Marks

Question
Several years ago we bought some old jewelry and tea spoons at an antique show in London.  We want to sell the tea spoons (which we think were made in 1899) but would like to know what the jewelers amrks mean.  One set just has E P N S stamped on each one.  The other set has a mark that i JW over FCW then there is a separate mark P, then a mark that looks like a lion, then and mark that is quite worn, that is in the shape of an A with an overlay that is too worn to see.  Any information from this on these two sets of tea spoons?  We live in Fort Myers Fl.  Thanks

Answer
Hello Wayne and thank you for your inquiry. The EPNS means Electroplate on Nickle Silver. The other mark is probably British. In order to match it up, I suggest you get a hallmark book from the library or purchase (inexpensive) Jackson's Hallmarks by Ian Pickford. It has all of the UK, British marks listed by name and hallmark drawing. Hope this helps !
