Identifying Silver Ornaments: Appraisal & Value Assessment

Question
Hi
My nan left me lots of different ornament/table decorations which she always said were silver. I cannot find hallmarks on them and have done lots of research on the net. I have two fighting cockerels, a dog, a pixie, two pheasant. Could I possible send you some pictures if you couldhelp me determine if they are junk or not.  Many thanks. Heather

Answer
Hello Nan and thank you for your inquiry. Many older items don't have markings and need to be tested for gold or silver content. You would need to take them to an appraiser or jeweler who could test them for you since it requires acid and can be harmful. You could probably get a referral from your local museum or library for someone locally. Most sterling items are either marked as such or carry the numbers 925, 900 or even 800. These marks indicate the quality of the silver with 925 being "sterling". I would definitely advise you to have them professionally checked out. Tbey sound very interesting !  Good Luck.
