Understanding GI Stamps on Gold Jewelry: What Does It Mean?

Question
Dear Thomas,

I bought a 14K white gold ring that has GI stamped on the inside.  What does GI mean?

Thank you,

Mariam

Answer
Hi, Mariam.

I believe the GI is a maker's mark.  The way the National Gold and Silver Marking Act requires, if a maker puts a quality mark on the metal, then they must "sign" the metal with their mark. The quality mark is the karat stamp or mark for other precious metal.  14k or 585 (possibly 583) would mean 14 karat and that is the QUALITY MARK.  The maker then must mark with their symbol to attest to the honesty of the quality mark.   The GI fits the bill for the makers mark.

If you purchased the ring from a store, they should be able to tell you what the initials stand for.

Thanks for asking.  God Bless and Peace.  Thomas.
