Valuing Your Vintage Topaz: A Guide to Determining Its Worth

Question
Dear Peter,
I recently came across a topaz stone that my grandmother left me amongst some other jewelry. It was purchased in Kuwait in 1963. The "guarantee" with it states that it is a 39.95carat natural gold topaz. Its color is light-like champagne. Can you tell me what this might be worth? I realize without seeing the stone it would probably be a wide range estimate.
Thank you,
Teresa

Answer
HI TERESA,

THE STONE AT 39.95 CTS WOULD BE WORTH IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD OF APPROXIMATELY $10 - $25 PER CARAT. LIKE YOU SAID I WOULD HAVE TO ACTUALLY SEE THE STONE. THE GAURANTEE IS ONLY AS GOOD AS THE COMPANY BACKING IT. SO AGAIN IT WOULD DEPEND ON SEEING IT.

GOOD LUCK

PETER
