Topaz Value: Appraisal of a Vintage 39.95ct Natural Topaz
QuestionDear Garrett,
I recently came across a topaz stone that my grandmother left me amongst some other jewelry. It was purchased in Kuwait in 1963. The "guarantee" with it states that it is a 39.95carat natural gold topaz. Its color is light-like champagne. Can you tell me what this might be worth? I realize without seeing the stone it would probably be a wide range estimate.
Thank you,
Teresa
AnswerTeresa,
You are correct that without seeing it, it's difficult to say. And I must admit I am not an expert on topaz, but I have seen some blue topaz recently close to that size and did ask how much it was.Gems can vary a great deal from stone to stone and even the value of different topazes vary a great deal. Blue and clear are worth the least and tend to cost $10-15/ct., oranges, reds and pinks tend to be worth much more.
Without seeing your topaz, I can only guess at a price range of $25-$80/ct.. The size of your stone works in your favor and tends to make the price per carat higher.
The best advice is to have the stone looked at by an appraiser, especially if you plan to sell it. His opinion would mean a lot more than mine obviously.
Best of Luck,
Garrett
