QuestionI have a beautifully engraved 18k 6mm wide gold band ring. It is a cylinder style and rather thick. The edges are on the sharp side and I find the ring not very comfortable. Could I bring it to a jeweler to round the inside edges to make it a "comfort fit" ring? Or will that ruin the ring? Thank you.
AnswerLinda, thanks for this question.
The answer is essentially a big YES. Both I and my coworker have done this many times to band rings. I am glad you mentioned the thickness and said it is rather thick. Thin rings really can only have a sharp edge rounded slightly but can not be made to come close to a comfort fit style.
As you know, the comfort fit style is the finger size in the center of the band and the edges from the center of the band outward the inside is rounded to a nice comfortable curve. This form goes on the finger easy and is comfortable to wear while still being the correct size for the finger.
With a thick band, the jeweler can certainly round and contour the inside of the band toward the edges, making your ring very close to a comfort fit profile.
Even if not contoured as extremely as a comfort fit, a rounding of the sharp feeling inside edges should be no problem. A bit of careful trimming with an abrasive wheel to shape and then a polish and all should look like the ring was that way from the start.
Thanks for asking. It is nice to say "YES" once in a while. : )
