White Gold Ring Thinning: Causes & Solutions

Question
I am afraid I don't know the carats but my white gold engagement ring has got very thin at the back and I wonder if it is because it is being worn by the wedding band? if this is the case what can I do about it.  I fear I did not research this at the time they were bought ( the wedding band made to fit by a church friend who is now unwell so I can't ask)

Answer
Rachel, good evening to you and thanks for the question.

If your engagement ring is wearing on the side touching the band, then the band is causing the wear.  The band will be wearing also but will likely not show the wear as much.

The karat of the gold does not make enough difference to be concerned with that. You see, even rings of the same karat will wear this way.  This is simply from movement of the band and engagement ring against each other.

There are solutions to the problem of wear and solutions to the thin ring shank(band) of your engagement ring.  First, the thin section can be removed and a new piece of metal put in its place. When done correctly, you will not know the work has been done by looking at the ring except the thickness will be more like it was when new.  That is how to fix the thin ring.

To prevent any more wear of that sort, the rings would need to be soldered together at the bottom.  This keeps the rings together and prevents the rings from rubbing against each other.  Some ladies like to do this and some will do this and leave the thin ring thin, since it will be attached to the band from then on.  Of course, some ladies do not want their two rings attached.  That is ok.  Just remember, there will always be some wear as the years go by.

The rings can wear and be repaired while the love stays going and going good.  My wife needs her ring checked soon...being a jeweler I should have checked it sooner. Twenty five years coming up and that does mean some wear.  Now, she wears the band most of the time and only wears the engagement ring to church and when she is not at work.
There are no real rules about that.

Rachel, I am glad you asked and I do hope my answer will help you.

God Bless and Peace.     Thomas.
