QuestionLisa,
I am writing with regard to a necklace I purchased at an antique show this past weekend. I bought it simply because I liked it, but when I got it home and cleaned it, I found that it shines like gold. I have searched it over and over with a loop, but can only find a stamp on the clasp that reads "WGC". Do you have any idea about this stamp? The necklace consists of 61 gold beads and is on a chain rather than string. It is quite heavy. When I got it, it was rather dark and cleaning it produced black marks on a polishing cloth. Any info you can give me would be helpful Thanks
Mark
AnswerHi Mark,
The best I can do is point you in the right direction to search the internet and research what you have. I don't specialize in antique or costume jewelry and am not familiar with all of the makers marks.
Many of my past answers have included links to sites that provide much information on makers and hallmarks. I would begin a search for "WGC makers mark" and then follow up that search with "WGC hallmark"
I did a quick search for "WGC makers mark" and found a few sites selling antiques with that mark present. I feel with a little research you could get to the bottom of it. Keep in mind, although gold should be hallmarked with karat fineness, it is not always the case. Even without a kt stamp you could still have gold. A quick way to know is to take it to a local jeweler or pawn shop and have them to a quick gold fineness test.
Good luck on your search,
Lisa
