Antique Gold & Seed Pearl Necklace Appraisal - Is It Authentic?

Question

antique necklace
QUESTION: I have inhertited a beautiful gold and seed pearl necklace from my mother. I have ben told it was my great, great grandmothers. I am unsure. I have looked for a Hallmark but the only things I can make out are 14k and a scripted x, the top of the right side of the x continues around to almost close on the bottom of the x. I tried to take a picture but didn't have any luck with clarity. It is in a heart shaped box. The necklace is very fine, as is the flower and leaf work.

ANSWER: Hello Mariyn and thank you for your inquiry. Your necklace is very pretty ! Since there is no actual hallmark to research it would be difficult to determine the maker.  Since it is marked 14K you should have it appraised for valuation by a professional estate appraiser.  Check with your local antique shop or museum for a referral to someone who could do this for you. Fine jewelry should always have an appraisal not only for insurance value but in case you decide to sell your item an appraisal will always increase the value. There are online appraisal sites that will work from close up photographs.  Their prices vary from $10 - $50.  You might come out better locally.  Sorry I couldn't be of more help but enjoy your beautiful necklace !

QUESTION: Hi Sally, would the 'X' type mark not be the maker's mark possibly? If you look at the picture I sent it has a line of type at the top. I tried to duplicate the mark that I found in a photoshop program. It is as close as I could get and it is the only other mark I found other than the 14k stamp.
Thanks for your reply
Marilyn

Answer
Hi Marilyn - The "x" could be a manufacturers mark, but usually there are other iconic markings. Most of the time a single letter was used as the line or design mark. I could not locate any single X marks like you describe. If I do find anythings, I will be sure to let you know.
