Identifying an 11th Century Brooch: Style and History

11th Century Brooch
Dear Sir/Madame
I recently found this brooch and it was identified by a local university as 11th century in design and materials. Any idea of what it is? Can you tell me more about it? The metal pin at the back in was the centre but it is completely disintegrated.

AnswerHello Andy and thank you for your inquiry. Your brooch appears to be heraldric in style. I could not pull up a close jpg so am just guessing by the shape. The university should be able to tell you why they base their identification as 11th century. Are there any markings or designs for that period ? Your best bet would probably be to check with your local museum for referral to an appariser that can give you authentication and valuation especially if it appears to be precious metal.
