Identifying Your Inherited Brooch: Celluloid vs. Other Materials

Question

Brooch
Hi Steve!  I inherited this brooch, but unfortunately didn't ask questions about it before everyone who could answer passed away. It appears to be celluloid affixed to metal, but doesn't pass the smell test for celluloid which I read about on the internet.  The design on the center of the brooch is very faint until the light catches it.  Any information you can give me would be greatly appreciated!  Anne

Answer
Hi Anne, Great piece! Did you put hot water on it or rub it and then smell it? It should smell like vinegar. If not then it is probably an early plactic. 1870 to 1890 most likely. English. It will have a tendency to crack if not already but your looks pretty good I must say. Valuation could be in the $300 range for insurance purposes. Enjoy.
