How to Remove and Replace an Earring Post in a Pearl

My wife gave me one of her pearl studs.  The stem had broken off and the cup remains on the pearl.  I have worked with jewelry as a hobby for many years but I am not sure how to loosen the post cap from a pearl.  What will soften the adhesive that is holding the stem in the pearl?

Are you sure the post does not go into the Perl as well..?
If you don't find some sort of a solution that will soften the adhesive... Perhaps you could carefully grind off the cop with a Foredom hand tool... There is a product called Goo
that removes sticky adhesive but I don't know if it would get underneath the cap
