Safely Removing a Pearl from a Ring Setting: Expert Advice

Hi Thomas,

I want to remove a large pearl from its setting before I sell the gold ring. The prongs are no problem, but it is glued in place. Can I use acetone or something similar, or will that damage the pearl? Thanks for your assistance!

Dear Cathie,

The solvent of choice is acetone, not affecting the pearl at all. Just be sure the pearl is a real one and not costume.  You likely know that already but a rub on the front teeth will help, with a pear feeling somewhat gritty to the front of the teeth and a fake one being smooth.

It might take a while to soak the cement loose.   Let me know how it goes for you.
