QuestionI have a ring with 14ksp engraved. What does this mean?
AnswerArt, from my reading of the national act for marking precious metals, a piece of jewelry does not have to show a metal mark. In other words, the item can be on the market with no quality mark. For a business to try and sell unmarked items would be foolish.
However, if a business does choose to mark the metal quality, the business must attest to the validity of the mark by stamping the business mark near the metal quality mark. The mark 14k sp appears to match this standard. I do not see a meaning for the sp regarding quality. Certainly, when the letter "p" pops up folks begin to suspect it means plated. If this should mean that, it does not match the recognized standards used in the USA. I believe this is a quality mark followed with the makers stamp.
If you are uncertain or need to know absolutely, you may call around and find a local jeweler who does metal testing. Take the ring and have it checked for 14k gold. Fair enough?
Best of luck wih the ring. God Bless and Peace. Thomas.
