Understanding Gold Karat Stamping: What You Need to Know
QuestionI have custom made 14 k ring from our local jeweler with microscopic sized diamonds which looked "pasted on it". I was charged $1300 for it, yet I noticed that there was no karat stamp on it. When I complained about the 14 k stamp he said he will order it for me. How is karat stamping done? Should all jeweler have the capability to stamp their gold jewelries?
AnswerHello,
It should have already been stamped. Who ever made the ring should have stamped it. As it is the ring should be tested to see what karat of gold it is, before it is stamped. Gold buyers can test it but make sure they do not use destructive method that would hurt the ring.
If the diamonds need to be either cast in the gold or bead set. Gluing on would never work the diamonds would fall off. 14 karat rings would not be made that way. If yours is that way then I doubt it is 14k gold.
